For those new to the series, Charley Davidson is The Grim Reaper. Yes, that's "the" with a capital T. Only instead of her approaching people as they die, those that have already died and are finally ready to move on approach her shining light as she's the portal to the next realm. She works as a PI that consults for the local police department, specifically for her uncle whose close rates have the precinct captain following her to see how she does it. Her secret is the fact that she sees and communicates with ghosts and gets information from them. Oh, and she has a relationship with the very sexy son of Satan, Reyes. The ghosts of 27 blonde women start showing up in Charley's apartment, only they're all so traumatized that they don't even acknowledge her presence; all except for a girl under her bed who is about seven. But even she isn't talking. So part of the book deals with discovering what happened to them. An arsonist is also burning down the buildings where Reyes had lived and she's not sure how to ask him if he's doing it as she'd have to have him arrested if he's guilty.
There are changes with this latest story. First, Charley had been suffering PTSD in the last book and she's much better now. But her lack of sleeping in the last book had her slap happy and the humor was much more laugh out loud--like it was in prior books--than in this tale. There's still humor and Charley is still as sarcastic as ever, but the humor feels more subdued, almost like Charley has matured. Another big change is her relationship with Reyes who has a bigger role which also provides humor and the intimacy has moved to a new level. We also learn about a number of really old prophecies regarding Charley and the real reason Reyes was sent to her. Somewhat on the downside is that Cookie isn't as involved in this story, but we're given a pretty good reason for that and I expect we'll see much more of her in the future.
Charley's sarcastic wit and her relationship with Reyes were what first drew me to the series. But I must say, after this book, I have a better appreciation for the storyline. And the ending? Hmmmm.
Gotta love the t-shirts!

Fifth Grave Past the Light Darynda Jones 9781250014405 Books Reviews
I was watching a documentary about a famous cinematographer and he was discussing the various starlets of the era who posed for portraits for him. He particularly loved shooting with lighting that went light, dark, light, dark. The picture that was shown as an example of this was quite arresting. Yes, the lady was beautiful, but the photographer added layers of intrigue with the lighting, made her an interesting character instead of just another pretty face.
The Charley Davidson universe reminds me of that. Light, dark, light, dark. Textures, layering. You find yourself laughing out loud at Charley and Cookie, then 3 pages later you're crying like a baby, or reading like a rabid monkey on crack, trying to see who is going to HELP (insert name here) BECAUSE IT ALREADY FEELS LIKE IT'S TOO LATE! And somebody better get there, and soon dammit, because I CARE ABOUT THESE PEOPLE!
I don't know how else to convey to you how very awesome this series is other than to say, to know Charley is to love her. You are drawn into her world, her zany, terrifying, hilarious, tragic, world and honestly, I always feel a bit sad when I have to leave it. In the immortal words of Tina Fey's daughter, "I want to go to there."
I forget about everything else when I am reading the Davidson books.
And that is the highest praise I can give an author.
I am so in love with this series. It has it all. Paranormal stuff. Steamy romance. And so many laughs. It is a book that makes me feel like an addict and I can't get enough. That ending had me so glad I was able to immediately start the next book though.
Here is a small piece that had me laughing harder than I have about a book in forever, and it really gives nothing away about the story so no spoiler warnings needed
"Cookie grinned as she walked over. 'I have to admit, it was fun pretending like Reyes was assaulting me. Me!' she said, indicating the women at one particular table. Thankfully none of them were Jessica. For once, she seemed to be elsewhere, but the entire table bristled when Cookie said that. It was fantastic.
As Uncle Bob tried to calm down Officer Pierce and Gemma, Reyes leaned forward, wrapped Cookie in his arms, and kissed her full on the mouth. I plastered a hand over my mouth as she clutched him like a cat hanging from a tree limb.
He released her slowly; then he spoke in a voice loud enough for the table of women to hear. 'If life were fair, Cookie Kowalski, you would be mine.'"
Seriously people Reyes is the BEST book boyfriend. He is definitely going on my top 10.
