FINAL DECISION: Enjoyable read but not as good as the second book in this series. I enjoyed the relationship between Zarabeth and Egan but for me the conflict wasn't strong enough to justify the time these two were at odds.

THE STORY: Egan MacDonald has loved Zarabeth for years. Despite her marriage to another man, he has not been able to forget her. When her husband plots a coup against her cousin, the Prince of Nvengaria, Zarabeth reveals the plot and is now in danger for her life. Zarabeth's cousin sends her to his friend Egan in Scotland for protection. Zarabeth is not the exuberant woman that Egan remembered. While Zarabeth is in danger, Egan and Zarabeth have the chance to rediscover a path together that they missed years ago.

OPINION: This is a second chance at love story about a woman who has been deeply hurt and the man she always loved. Zarabeth and Egan are a good match for one another despite his attempts to keep her at arms length. He loves her but he doesn't believe himself good enough for her.

While there are magical elements in this story, the core is the relationship between Zarabeth and Egan. Her desire for him and her fears as a result of her marriage, his desire for her competing with his belief in his inadequacies.

I liked the romance here which was quiet and took a while for the two to work through their problems.

For me the negative of this book was that the conflict was not strong enough to really justify these two being at odds for so long.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces the couple for the novella THE LONGEST NIGHT.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HIGHLANDER EVER AFTER is the third book in the Nvengaria series. This book can be read as a standalone because the romance is self-contained although there are overlapping characters.

I've read most of Jennifer's books and have to say this was my least favorite. It dragged and it was really hard to relate to the characters. Thank God this wasn't the first book I've read from her or I wouldn't have read anymore. I will continue to look for her books as they come out because there is always one bad apple in the bunch. Hopefully they only get better than this.
Loving someone for a long time and finally getting the opportunity to act on that love. But you have to overcome a few obstacles first. Then the reward will be great.
I was seriously disappointed. After reading other Jennifer Ashley books I expected more. It wasn't especially humorous nor did it reverberate with suspense or romance. There was nothing in the beginning to "hook" the reader nor was there a plot that kept you wanting to know what happened next.
The book just kind of plodded along looking for an intriguing ending that never apperared. I would suggest saving your money on this one!

I really had high hopes for Egan MacDanold's story, you read about him in the first two books in the series. He is portrayed as a Great Lover who has been a Lover to many Grand Elite Women of the Ton, Egan has been in these women's bed all over Europe, He is also know to be a fearless warrior Highlander. Zarabeth is Egans Love interest in the story. They have been in love for 5 years and have know each other for 12 years. Egan is Zarabeth's fathers best friend. When Zarabeth finally seduces Egan in a kiss , he flees leaving her. She marries and her husband is very cruel to her. Zarabeth also discovers her husband plotting to kill her cousin Damien the Royal Prince and overthrow his government. She sneak away and tells Damien, knowing her life is in danger Damien sends her away to their friend Egan in Scotland. This is wear my problem with the story comes in the two of them have been in love for at least 5 years and when they are finally reunited the only one that seems to be in love is Zarabeth, Egan constantly rejects her and when he does make love to her it is not great; it is not the image you are lead to believe about egan in the previous books. Well the Romance and Love you believe they share just is not their. I know Ms Ashley can write very sensual love scene because she does it in all her other books which makes This was a real let down!!!!
I love Jennifer Ashley's Nvengaria series. All of the books have been great fun to read. A bit on the steamy side but also with romance and villainy and happily ever after endings. I loved all of the characters and look forward to the final book in this series.
... is because I'm comparing this book to the previous two books in the series. This one is good. I love Egan and Zarabeth, I just don't love them as much as the first two couples. When I read a review, I'm always looking to find out if it's a "sweet" romance story. It's not, there are sex scenes. There are really good sex scenes. So, the book is good. I liked The Mad, Bad Duke much more, but heck, if you've already committed to the first two, you might as well read the last two. I've already downloaded The Longest Night.
