Not exactly my cup of tea. There were lots of twists and turns that kept my interest. Easy to read.
Celine Kirkland was in a horrific carriage accident in a storm after her mother-in-law's funeral. Celine barely survived, and she lost her unborn baby, her husband and father-in-law. Justin Andrews took her to his plantation to recover. While there, Justin's eldest son, Trevor, came to visit. Trevor found himself bewitched by this beautiful, tragic figure, and despite her bold rebuffs, Trevor was sure she felt the attraction, too. But where could this possibly go? Trevor was not in the market for marriage and neither was Celine.

My advice is to start this book at 40%. Until that point, nothing but self talk about lust in the characters' heads is discussed. Trevor is supposed to be the head of an international shipping firm, but all he does is idly wonder about the plantation, thinking about having sex with Celine, and Celine can't think about anything but going to bed with Trevor. In actuality, both Trevor and Celine have more scenes with everyone around them than with each other. Trevor was written as an angry, jealous, rebel with severe mother issues. IMHO, almost every man in the book seemed a better romantic hero than Trevor. I almost gave up finishing this book numerous times. I was so bored. Finally, at 40% we get some action.

The second half of the book finds Celine and Trevor all over the western half of the United States suffering injuries, near death experiences, swindlers, lechers, Native Americans, wars, duels, quarantines, almost every negative experience one can imagine. Everything is fantastical, improbable and/or impossible. And, once again, the lovers are suffering all this separately. One could get whiplash from the twists and turns of the second half of the book. I will say this, it kept my attention, but my mind was often going into "WHAT?" Mode. The explanation of the duel after it was over was a jumbled mess of psycho babble that never would have taken place in this time period, and especially by an alpha male.

Kathleen Bittner Ross has real trouble plotting. She could have had three or four good books out of this book, instead she threw everything but the kitchen sink into one mix, 'causing this book to be very mediocre.

The first half of the book had the H and h angry at, or jealous of, each other all the time. There was never any event where they had a pleasant encounter. There are one or two pleasant interludes in the second half. We readers are supposed to believe that this is love. Where I came from, it was taught that one should run, don't walk away from this antagonistic, insecure, immature behavior. Love for me is an euphoric, magical adventure, experienced by two people together, not separately. As I mentioned before, the second half gave the main characters no time together at all until the very last few pages. As a romance, this book is a one star. If one likes disjointed action and peril, that starts at 40%, the book is a 3 star.

The sex scenes are done very well, though. Kathleen Bittner Ross introduces Wolf in this book. He is the Hero in the next book of this series. The author does a good job of making him intriguing, but in view of this reading experience, I am not sure that this author will not bore me senselessly, again, in the next book. Roth has lots of good ideas, but this book did not demonstrate an ability to develop these ideas. Have not decided if I will ever pick up another of her books.
