I live in the desert. The familiar are the Navajo, the Zuni, all the others. These are ours, the Anasazi, the favorite argument of scientists and scholars as to where they went and why. This literally takes you to an unknown place of the true fear of the people. Places we can't even imagine in our dreams. I loved it and can barely wait for Book 2. Bravo.

The Visitant Book One of the Anasazi Mysteries Kathleen O'Neal Gear W Michael Gear 9780812540338 Books Reviews

I enjoyed thus book, but it left many unanswered questions. How is Hail Walking Stick connected to the ancient tribes? What does happen to the ancient tribe? And what is happening with the ancient talisman? I'm looking forward to pursueing these questions in vol 2.
I have read all the 'people of' series as well as the 3 books in the Anasazi series. For those who are interested, the PEOPLE OF THE MOON best follows the PEOPLE OF THE SILENCE as the characters in PEOPLE OF THE MOON are the grandchildren of the characters in the PEOPLE OF THE SILENCE. The Anasazi series best follows the PEOPLE OF THE MOON as the characters are the grandchildren of the characters in THE PEOPLE OF THE MOON! All 3 books in the Anasazi series are incredible. If it were possible to have 1500 page book, they would be best combined into one book as the sequence of the 3 is important to get optimal enjoyment!
Being an archaeologist it is entertaining to read fictional books about ourselves, which is just what this book presents us with.
It is a tale of ancient murder that is paralled by a modern excavation of the site. Some may be disappointed by the modern chapters of the book; and I can see why, many of the jokes are directed at archaeologists themselves and most likely would not make much sense or have the same impact on those not working in the field.
Archaeologically this book is right on target, the methodology used to excavate as well as the depiction of the Anasazi way of life in the post-Chacoan era is right on target, which should be expected due to the fact that the Gears are archaeologists themselves.
I highly reccommend this novel to both the neophyte to the field as well as the expericenced field archaeologist. It is provacative and an accurate depection of life in chaco canyon after the fall of the great houses.
The writing style of The Visitant is a diversion from previous books by the Gears, although a very pleasant diversion. Prior books have been introduced with a contemporary archeological find and then the story of that prehistory character is developed. In this first of three novels the reader has the opportunity to keep pace with the current day characters as they "dig into" the story behind their find. This enables the reader to feel more a part of that story. As with all books by the Gears, however, it would be helpful to have a list of the main characters names, and perhaps relationships, provided along with the site maps-just to help keep the players straight. This is an interesting twist on the solving of a murder mystery in times before modern forensics.
I have enjoyed these mysteries very much. I'm on the third in the trilogy. The plots move along very fast with a lot of side adventures going on in addition to the main storyline. Gear's descriptive ability with the characters and the southwest country, flora and fauna add to the story immensely. It makes it easy to put yourself right in the book. I couldn't put this first book down and immediately downloaded the second book so I could keep the story going. The way Gear switches from prehistory to current time and back again running two sets of characters side by side also works and adds to the reading excitement. I've enjoyed reading the Anasazi Mysteries more than any of the Gear's other books.
This book is a true master piece. It's a 10,000 year old mystery woven around real archaeology. A story
Created and woven as expertly as an Indian water basket..You''ll love this first book. You won't be able to put it down.
Michael Gear is famous for being able to sustain his writing energy through book after book (his SPIDER TRILOGY remains a landmark of sci-fi writing). With Gear and Gears' ANASAZI MYSTERY SERIES the writing has, over all, gotten better. This is the first volume in a series that already has 5 books, and the last one left enough loose ends to craft a 6th one. Throughout the first 3 books the authors bounce between contemporary archaeology and Anasazi societies 1000 years ago. Gear/Gear handle the frequent time-frame transitions smoothly. This is very fine fiction writing.
