Suite Scarlett Maureen Johnson Books
Imagine your family owned a hotel in New York City. It wasn't a giant chain hotel, but an old historical sort of hotel. Imagine you lived in the hotel, slept in a suite, ate in the dining room and helped at the front desk after school. If you can't imagine this, Maureen Johnson's novel, Suite Scarlett, helps you with that.Scarlett's family lives in a run down hotel in New York City. The charm of the hotel is its history, but Scarlett's family is struggling to keep the doors open and as our story begins, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse. With a younger sister who is a cancer survivor and whose medical bills didn't help the family finances, an older brother who wants to be a starving actor - quite literally if he has to be - and an older sister who seems like she has it all together, Scarlett and her siblings have to band together to help her family with the hotel. Top this off with her brother's play that seems doomed from it's beginning, his scene partner that has Scarlett seeing stars and the mysterious Mrs. Amberson who likes to shake things up and you've got a book packed with a fun and witty plot.
A quick-thinking, problem solver with strong family ties, Scarlett, is an endearing character and I found myself cheering for her from the very beginning. Mrs. Amberson - who moves into their hotel for the summer - takes her on as an assistant and meddles in the life of her family, putting Scarlett in some awkward situations which she has to power through. There is a bit of sibling rivalry, but it's clear to see that Scarlett and her siblings love and respect each other.
There are times when the story read a little sitcomesque, but overall I thought that Suite Scarlett was a wonderful read. Though it walks the line, it never crosses over to saccharine or corny; its quick pace guarantees that there is never a dull moment.

Suite Scarlett Maureen Johnson Books Reviews
`Suite Scarlett' by Maureen Johnson is an enjoyable and easy to read YA book. However, I had many problems and issues with the circumstances the lead character Scarlett found herself in. Firstly, the plot was unique in that Scarlett's family owned and lived in a hotel and the NY setting was fun to read about.
However, I thought most of the situations Scarlett found herself in were extremely unrealistic and I found her relationship with her brother Spencer extremely awkward and almost incestuous. I was very uncomfortable reading about their dynamic because it seemed like more of a bf/gf relationship than a brother and sister one.
I also had problems with the fact that a girl who just turned 15 is dating a college freshman and no-one sees a problem with that. All of the comings and goings of Scarlett seemed unrealistic and I had to shake my head several times when reading the book.
Given all of the above, you may think that I wouldn't have enjoyed the book but I actually finished it and thought it was well-written. It is obvious that Maureen Johnson is a talented writer but she needed to make her main character about 3-4 years older for this to be a believable story.
There is a sequel to `Suite Scarlett' called `Scarlett Fever' that is available to read as well.
Every 15th birthday in the Martin family is special. It is at this age that each of the Martin children has received suites in the family's Hopewell Hotel that they are responsible for. And on her birthday, Scarlett receives the Empire Suite, along with its new permanent guest, Mrs. Amberson. Mrs. Amberson is unconventional, exasperating, and demanding, and Scarlett resents that because of her, she can't get a regular summer job. But when Mrs. Amberson saves Scarlett's brother Spencer's show, a rendition of Hamlet, from certain disbandment, and insists on being a part of it, Scarlett doesn't quite mind so much. It would certainly bring her a lot closer to Eric, who is very good looking and just happens to be a part of the cast...
Suite Scarlet is quirky, fun, and oh so hilarious. Johnson's trademark engaging writing style, subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor, and intelligent lexicon will not fail to captivate readers once again. It's wonderfully refreshing to read about siblings that actually like each other, but are every bit as dysfunctional as the next family. The dynamics between Scarlett and Spencer especially are a delight to read, and their characters are wonderfully pragmatic and expressive. Mrs. Amberson is a sort of insane and intriguing enigma whose eccentricities and antics add just the right amount of pizzazz to the plot. Throw in each of the carefully presented details, from avid descriptions of Scarlett's family and friends, and crazy theatrical catastrophes, to bits of trivia from throughout the lives of the Martin family, and you have a comprehensive look at Scarlett's life, forging a connection between reader and protagonist that you won't want to sever...and you want have to; a sequel is already in the works. The release of Suite Scarlett has only reinforced Johnson's status as one of the top YA authors out there today.
