Dead Is the New Black Marlene Perez Books
This book is narrated by Daisy and she has an engaging conversational style that draws you in even though you know that the plot, the angst, and the drama will all be fairly standard. There is a nice balance between humor and restraint, so you never get the feeling that the jokey angles are being forced down your throat. Daisy has an interesting and uncommonly good relationship with her Mom and her siblings, which gives the book a nice lift. The romance is pretty mild and Daisy's boy crazy moments seem real rather than forced or exaggerated for effect. The upshot is that you get a supernatural action/mystery that's held together by a pretty grounded and relatable main character. That's a nice combo and it seems like it would be very appealing for an ambitious middle grade or young YA reader. The writing is solid and the book is well crafted. There are a few sharp lines and observations, although the overall vibe is pretty mellow. A nice find.

Dead Is the New Black Marlene Perez Books Reviews
This book was great when I first read it, it's a cute entertaining story, but it's only 190 pages, I think 6 dollars is a little bit ridiculous price for this a reasonable price would be like 3 or 4 dollars at the most. I still would read it though
Great book, great series.
definitely a "teen" book. The writing could have been a little more... adult(?) but the conversation was good and the plot was highly entertaining. Teens can read heavy too...
I'd call this "Sookie-Light." Perfect for a pool-side afternoon. It was easy to read. so easy that I read it in a busy house in less than 3 hours. But I liked this book... otherwise I wouldn't have been compelled to finish it in one night.
Dead Is the New Black is a fast read, and more fun than most of the other vampire books out there. It's good, clean fun -- appropriate for younger teens and tweens who may not be ready for some of the more sexually charged paranormal stories out there, and the characters are interesting, if not terribly complex.
Daisy has the typical role of unsure sort-of outcast, both in her family, where she's the only "normal" (or so it seems), as well as at school, where she thinks she has no chance at the guy of her dreams, especialy when he's nurtured a crush on her former best friend, Samantha.
If you are looking for a quick, fun read for you or your younger teen, Dead Is the New Black fits the bill.
This was a silly young-reader I picked up for entertainment in between some hard-core study sessions. As prose, it leaves a lot to be desired. Exposition is delivered at break-neck speeds and plot holes abound. But since this is young adult fiction, I was willing to let a lot of that go. The author seemed to be deliberately dropping clues to let the reader play detective, but was un-artful about it. I was exactly 16% of the way through when I figured out who the bad guy was and what they were doing. I think I had seen the same plot on an episode of Smallville.
I love quirky names and this story delivers (for example, Mort Bone, the funeral home guy). There are plenty of fantastic magical antics reminiscent of a Disney channel show or old-school Nickelodeon. People who enjoy weirds-ville mysteries like those in Roswell or Eureka may like this book series.
Daisy is a `normal' girl living in a family of psychics. She feels like an outsider, both at home and in school. Her once best friend, Samantha, is spotted looking incredibly pale and sort of dead. Then, a girl from the cheerleading squad is attacked and found at the morgue, while others are suffering from seizures. Daisy decides to go undercover to find out what is really happening to the girls at school. Could a vampire be sucking the life out of the girls? Could her sister be dating a monster? Will Daisy find out the secret hidden from the `normals?'
This paranormal young adult mystery is a great, fun read. The weave of the supernatural in contemporary teen life is seamless. The characters are creative and unforgettable. Daisy's character will appeal to many teenagers who feel they are outsiders. Her teenage romance with a gorgeous football player will also charm the reader. This tale takes a unique perspective on the vampire/monster theme.
This is the first in a series of Paranmormal adventure's aimed for young adults 12 years and up. I am not in the market range but I enjoyed this story very much before passing it along to my stepdaughter. I intend to read the other books in this series as well. This book tells the story of Daisy, a non-psychic child who lives with her mother (a psychic) and her sisters Rose and Poppy, who both have psychic abilites. Daisy feels like she doesn't quite fit in. With her family or at school. But suddenly Nighshade's cheerleaders are becoming very deathly ill..its almost like something is literally sucking the life from them. As a favor to her ex-best friend Samantha, Daisy joins the squad. From that vantage point, Daisy and her new boyfriend start to investigate the murder of a teenage girl who shows up walking and talking to the pep rally...It soon apparent that Nightshade has more than its fair share of odd beings. This story was quick and quirky and fun. It definetly caught and kept my attention and my step-daughter loved it. The writing is well done and the characters are well crafted. The paranormal jukebox is just one of many great touches. I think this book will captivate any teen or pre-teen and maybe their parents. I recomend this book as lighthearted, clean, paranormal fun.
