In the latest story of the Elder Races, two mates face their deadliest challenge yet—each other…

Pia and Dragos’s magical young son Liam (the Peanut), is growing at an unprecedented rate, and if that isn't enough, he is also exhibiting new, and unpredictable, magical gifts. To protect him, the concerned parents decide to move to upstate New York.

Both Dragos and Pia relish the idea of leaving behind the city. They finally have the space to indulge their Wyr side, and Liam can grow in safety. It’s a breath of fresh air—literally—but their idyllic situation is shattered when Dragos is injured in a freak accident.

Stripped of his memory and bereft of Pia’s taming influence, there’s nothing holding back Dragos’s darkest side. And in order to restore her family and save her mate, Pia must confront the most powerful menace in Elder Races history.

It’s going to take more than a penny to fix this…

PIA SAVES THE DAY is part of a three-story series about Pia, Dragos, and Peanut. Each story stands alone, but fans might want to read all three DRAGOS TAKES A HOLIDAY, PIA SAVES THE DAY, and PEANUT GOES TO SCHOOL.

These characters are tried and true. Thea Harrison knows these characters inside out and upside down. "Dragos takes a Holiday" had a joyous feel to it. This story is very much crisis centered. Thea Harrison is not afraid to take risks and she unfolds a story in her way and in her time. This is the difference between a good writer and a great writer. There is a feeling of nostalgia and sadness in this story. It is wonderful to see such a tight focus on Pia and Dragos. I love Peanut but it was nice to have Pia and Dragos be in the spotlight for a bit. For those who are looking for Peanut he's on the sidelines for this novella. It was necessary for the story for this to happen. I gave it 4 stars because it was not as great as the other stories, The chemistry between Apia and Dragos was a little different in this book so it did not pack the same kind of punch for me. I still enjoyed it and will reread it!

Pia Saves the Day A Novella of the Elder Races edition by Thea Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The cover for this one is kind of strange, isn't it? Minus the dragon in the corner I would have thought this was some outdoorsy-type memoir or something. Also, I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be Pia on the cover but I thought it was a teenage boy. Oops.

Anyway, Pia saves the day really cut my heart out right about at chapter two when a freak construction accident causes Dragos to be buried under a bunch of rocks. He hits his head badly and doesn't remember Pia, his Sentinels, really anything about his life. He doesn't even remember his son, Liam. This crushes Pia but she doesn't give herself many minutes to be upset. She launches into action, making contingency plans in case everything goes bad (as if it could get worse) and sets off to find Dragos and help him remember her.

For a while I was really concerned whether Dragos would actually REMEMBER Pia and his life with her. While I always love these glimpses into their lives this one wasn't as enjoyable for me. Partly because of the story (ah it really did tear my heart out) but also because it felt incomplete. The ending felt very rushed to me and left me pretty darn worried about my favorite little PNR family.

Probably my favorite part of this story was the chapter from Dragos' POV when he is pure dragon. Thea Harrison captures his wild animal spirit so, so well! Dragos is such a ferociously intelligent being, yet ruled by his Dragon nature. These two things are always balanced so well. While alpha heroes abound in PNR there aren't any quite like Dragos...

Despite the second half feeling rushed and my dissatisfied feeling at the end this is part two of a three part novella series so I'm looking for more closure in the next story. I love the Elder Races universe and even if you pass by the other books Dragos and Pia are a couple you must not miss.
I have read this whole series and like it very much. Thea Harrison has a very nice even tone throughout this series that I really like. There is enough plot and peril and romance to satisfy without the heavyweight doom slaughter and prophecy of some series (Thumbs down to George R R Martin GOT ShadowUnit and others - if I wanted to read about good folks dying too soon I would just renew my newspaper subscription so I could keep up with the next Sandy Hook school shooting or Lockerbie)

This series also has moments of chuckling humour and dexterity in characterization. I am also fond of seeing ongoing development of characters met in earlier books. The story does not stop at the marriage or mating with an implied "and they lived happily ever after". Treating your cast of characters as if you were writing more of a TV series than tradition romance or paranormal romance is an approach I first noticed in J.R. Ward, and one I approve heartily. I like Harrison's world building even more because of the breadth - not just shapeshifters and vampires, but elves and djinn and harpies and more. It is particularly interesting that the elves are not all shiny bright good guys and that Dragos has a real dislike for them. I definitely recommend this series. This particular novella is not a standalone. It is about the fifth major appearance of these characters in the series and the second of three projected novellas on Pia, Dragos and their son. I liked this one even more than Dragos Takes a Holiday, which was a lot of fun. However I always appreciate it when an author does some research to support a plotline and I enjoy learning something new. This was an entirely more serious entry with dark implications for the future, but very well done. Some angles I had not considered before, even though M. Liu, M. Ferrarella and others have written this plotline too. I also like that there are few absolutes - magic can do many miracles but not every miracle. Immortals or fae are endangered by modern explosives. The Vampire demesne has immigration quotas and red tape bureaucracy. Love this series. Like this book.

This entry was very strong on characterization with Pia and is aptly titled. Not only for what she did do, but for all the other things she might have done that would not have been as strong right or effective. It also did not downplay the fear or fatigue that is true to life in these situations. Five stars.
THE STORY Pia's world is torn apart when Dragos is involved in an accident and doesn't remember his life or her. Pia has to face the most dangerous creature on earth and wonders if she has lost her mate forever.

OPINION The amnesia story allows another trip through Pia and Dragos falling in love. I thought the intense emotions of Pia and her fears were well done and made this story worth reading. I am not a fan of amnesia stories although this one was well done. I did like seeing the primitive dragon without all the civilized veneer of Dragos. For fans of Pia and Dragos it was nice to have more of this fascinating couple.

WORTH MENTIONING I am pleased that Harrison keeps revisiting the First Family of the Wyr because Dragos, Pia and Liam are my favorite characters.

FINAL DECISION This novella was an interesting story of falling in love again for the first time, but I am not a fan of the amnesia stories in general.

CONNECTED BOOKS PIA SAVES THE DAY is book number 6.6 of the Elder Races series. It is most closely related to a trio of novellas including DRAGOS TAKES A HOLIDAY and PEANUT GOES TO SCHOOL. The story of Pia and Dragos begins in DRAGON BOUND and continues in LORD'S FALL.

STAR RATING I give this novella 4 stars.
