I remember taking this book out from the library over and over again when I was a kid. I'm quite happy about having one of my own, and hopefully I'll find a horse-loving girl to pass it down to later.

The Monday Horses Jean Slaughter Doty 9780688801342 Books Reviews

With all the junk that is published today, why is this wonderful story out of print?

Jean Slaughter Doty should be in every horse mad girl's library. This is an intelligent and realistic portrayal of the horse show world, the joys and the sorrows.

Another must have Doty book is "Can I get there by Candlelight" Magic!
I loved this book when I was a child. I had forgotten the name of it over the years, but remembered well the characters and the plot. One day, while reading reviews for a different book, I came across this title and thought, "Aha! That's it!" What luck! I read it as soon as it arrived, and loved it all over again.
I read this book when I was a tween and have read it many times since. It is perhaps my favorite book from childhood in that it was well written, believable and it was about that girl every horse crazy girl wants to be....the one winning all the ribbons riding the best horses. I eventually grew up to have similar circumstances and found myself reaching for that old, worn copy of the Monday Horses.
The best written, most true-to-life horse story I have ever read. I first read this book when I was 10 or 11 years old and was showing my own pony. I never competed at the level that they did, but I can still see the images in my mind that this book created for me and I remember some of the text word-for-word. I am now in my 40s and I was recently cleaning out some boxes in the attic at my mother's house when I came across this book--I was overjoyed!! I thought I had lost it and it was out of print so I would never find it again. I have read it many times and JSD is my favorite equine author of all time. I'm looking forward to sharing it with my own daughters as they grow as readers and riders!
This is one of my favorite horse stories of all time. I read it first when I was 12 and I still read it from time to time. It is captivating and well written. Jean Slaughter Doty captures the essence of the horse world so well that you lose yourself in this book. She is a terrific author and I have read many books she has written in the horse genre. This is another wonderful story and the reader will find themselves looking for more stories from her.
This is among the best written horse novels ever written. It was written for kids, but it is a fine read for adults as well. It is realistic and gritty, in a way that more horse books should be - reminding us all that horses are hard work, and that there are plenty of disappointments along with the thrill and the glory when it all goes well.

The Monday Horses is set in an A-circuit hunter-jumper stable, following Cassie as she gets a catch ride on a top pony and rides in in pursuit of a Horse of the Year award. Riddle Me This and Mustard Seed live on with other great equines in literature.

I have read this book dozens of times since buying it as a teenager, and I still enjoy it decades later.
I found this book at the tender age of 13 so many years ago and it was a real eye opener giving a glimpse into how the showing world can really be. Cassies horse toby gets hurt and she brings him to a nearby classy horse stables. To help pay for his upkeep while he heals she agrees to do jobs around the stables. From cleaning and caring for the horses to riding in shows, this showcases the darker underbelly of competetive horsemanship when she finds out that a feisty pony named Riddle she shows has been drugged to improve his performance and make him more manageable.this is an underrated gem! Definately worth the time to read if you can find it
I remember taking this book out from the library over and over again when I was a kid. I'm quite happy about having one of my own, and hopefully I'll find a horse-loving girl to pass it down to later.
