I loved this book! I felt like I was right there in the beautiful woods and meadows of the Laurel mountains. Loved the characters too. Claire is SO much my kind of writer that it's almost like she's read my mind and knows just how I think. The main reason I didn't rate this wth 5 stars is that just one thing distracted me a little and that was that the main character would describe each of a myriad of feelings she could see in people's eyes. But this could only be a lack and kind of bias on my part, because it doesn't seem possible to me to do that. As hard as I've tried in my life, I've never been able to see anything in people's eyes, except colors, irises, pupils etc. (I can see feelings on faces, but not so many and not in their eyes themselves. Maybe I'm just being too literal.)

Also, I'd like to correct another reviewers comment, who said they didn't like the book, because of too much cursing. I've never seen any cursing in Edie Claire books, and it's one of the many things I like about her writing! I think the reviewer must have been thinking of some other author or book.

This is the second Edie Claire book I have read and I will be reading more. Her characters are believable and her story lines are complex enough to weave intrigue throughout the book. This novel touched on the plight of adoptees, and their tendency to not feel connected to anyone. And of course there was a romance bubbling just below the surface. As always Edie kept me guessing right up to the end.
This book was a romance although it read like a suspense novel with good character builds, beautiful scene descriptions that made you feel that you could see it, and a realistic plot that pulled the reader on wanting to know the outcome. A recommended read for any age group but still worldly enough for the older experienced adult.
It was an interesting idea to write about adopted people that still wonder where they come from after they become an adult. The feeling that something is still missing and their frustration and feelings about finding out more was something I had never thought about. I thought it was a good story and I liked the ending.
Buy it, download it, & enjoy every minute on the edge of your seat. I haven't read such a good book in a long time & I loved every minute of this book. it's an awesome story line, definitely had characters that you can rela r email with no matter what background you come from, & the way she writes puts you in the mindset that you feel that you are in the story with every page. I couldn't put this book down & am excited to continue reading more from her! she has quickly became my favorite author & this book will not disappoint. it's full of drama & heart stopping twists that have you guessing until the very last page. I was sad when the story ended because I wanted to continue reading more from her every day! I have downloaded more from her & I'm sure you will too after reading this amazing book! I can't give it enough stars to satisfy my recommendation for this book. Edit Claire has a pure & true talent & I can't wait for more!!
I read the first book in the series...loved it! Didn't realize it had bk 2/3.... So read book 2 Meant to be...couldn't stop reading..and the characters are perfect...felt like I was right in the book with them!! It's a romantic mystery...which I love to read-a great mystery with some romance- perfect! I will say it was a little slow in the beginning to get into the character...but quickly picks up and full speed ahead!!
I have purchased almost all of Edie Claire's books because she usually has well-developed characters dealing with realistic conflict, and the ending is almost always satisfying. I enjoyed this book, and, as usual, sat up way too late reading it because I HAD to know what was going on. It was fun, kept me interested, and had a satisfying ending. That said, I'm thinking this is one of Edie Claire's early books, because the main character, Meara, is a tad stereotypic, the plot that has everyone an adoptee is cutesy, there's no explanation for why she and I just couldn't believe the whole bit about inheriting the entire mountain top. Maybe I've just developed a high level of cynicism over 36 years of working as a mental health counselor..........I dunno! I want to emphasize that I liked the book overall - it is well-written and satisfying - just a bit too coincidental in some of the plot.
I really wanted to like this story about family history mysteries and romance, but the relationship doesn't come until the last few chapters so the book seems more of a mystery with romantic elements. The violence was unexpected and too much for my tastes. The quest to know one's genetic background was engaging, and the surprise revelation about the hero's identity was rewarding. Overall, not enough romance to convince me to buy other books by the author.
